Saving Time, 2018
Video, DLP digital projector, CCD scanner, computer
Dimensions variable
Saving Time is comprised of a digital projected video, my laptop, and a digital scanner constantly scanning the face of a ticking clock. The projected video is made of still frames from each scan of the clock face. Because the scanner creates the image line by line while the clock hands are moving, the resulting image has stretches and rainbow distortions. Time is generally measured by movement such as the hands of a clock or the movement between energy levels of uranium isotopes. Inspired by the transformations that take place in the creation and measuring of time, Saving Time imagines a new form of alchemy in which digital technologies facilitate the transformation of time and matter into color and form.
Foregrounding this work, is its dependence on and use of my personal computer to publicly display and generate the work. Thus the work enables me to unplug from my computer based work and life, saving me time for other endeavors, while also creating a document of the time I have spent away from my computer.
